Applications

CV & Cover Letters

YES YES YES:

  • Nail your written communication - readability is VERY important, take time to do spell checks, correct formatting and proof read.
  • Include achievements and extracurriculars to show you're well rounded - employers are looking for industry related work experience & team work experience through student extracurriculars.
  • Authenticity - take time to personalise your CV and Cover Letter, recruiters can tell if you have bulk sent applications.
  • Clarity surrounding your right to work e.g. what is your VISA status.
  • Location flexibility - show that you are willing to move to different locations.

NO NO NO:

  • Spelling errors.
  • Incomplete applications - try to always reach the max word limit in your applications.
  • No glamour shots as your picture on your CV - recruiters at the event preferred no headshot. If you use LinkedIn, they can easily access a image if needed. However, it's all personal preference.

Which one is more important? GPA OR Extracurriculars?

  1. If your grades are not outstanding, it's important to show improvements in your GPA - most companies will have minimum GPA requirements for internship and grad roles.
  2. Know how to apply knowledge you've learnt at school - Some recruiters will ask what you learnt in school and how you applied it in a real life context.
  3. Extracurriculars give you different experiences to the person next to you - Grades and your degree is one piece of the puzzle, recruiters are looking for what's unique about you and what you're bringing to the table.

Video Interviews and Company Culture

  1. Always do your video interviews in appropriate backgrounds e.g. libraries.
  2. Make sure you're completely in frame for video interviews.
  3. Do your homework on what kind of company culture they have before you apply - Think about... "is this the right fit for me?"
  4. Companies are also looking for individuals who can add to their company culture.

How do you sell your personal brand?

YES YES YES:

  1. Get involved with things around you and your personal brand will follow.
  2. Be authentic and genuine on ALL your social media platforms - be mindful on open forums and what you're sharing because employers will definitely look at everything. Edit your privacy settings.
  3. Be deliberate and personable on social media - add personal messages to connection requests on LinkedIn.
  4. Share your experiences and give back to the community - This can help build your brand and show that you have influence in your community.

Networking

Networking is a HUGE PART of the recruitment process, it's a chance for you to meet prospective employers. Make an impression and learn a bit about whether the company is right for you.

5 Tips to Make the Most of Networking

  1. Come to the event with your big questions and leave the employer with a good impression - it shows that you're thoughtful and prepared.
  2. Met the employer before? Always remind employers that you've met before - This creates a good start for the conversation.
  3. Part gracefully - If a conversation is not going well, be okay with leaving the conversation after thanking them for their time.
  4. Use networking as an opportunity to hear about the employers thoughts on the company culture - If you don't vibe with the employer at a networking event, it's not an indication of whether you're a cultural fit.
  5. Do not drink too much alcohol - It can ease the nerves but all in moderation

I have little networking experience, what should I do?

  1. Set realistic goals along the year - tell yourself "I want to go to this networking event and my goal is to speak to 'x' number of employers." If you have achieved your goal, you can then relax and possibly challenge yourself again.
  2. Take every opportunity as a networking opportunity - Take baby steps in building your confidence, introduce yourself to a student in class or at an event.
  3. Speed networking is a great way to get yourself into it.
  4. Stuck for questions? Use the same questions you would ask a fellow student - 'where and what do you study?' ask the same to employers 'where do you work and what do you do?" - you can even practice this at home or with a friend.

Application Process

We asked the recruiters what their recruitment process is looking like in 2019.
  • 2degrees: Graduate programs are opening in June/July - taking 5-6 grads across the roles
  • ASB: ASB has two graduate programs, 'Future Me' and technology early career talent scheme 'Start Me Up'. 'Future Me' is opening in March and 'Start Me Up' will begin later in May.
  • MYOB: Their intake is quite flexible, the best way to keep up to date is to sign up to their grad program emailing list.

  • CPA: There is a student network for CPA that can give you the latest resources for recruitment and job searching.
  • Global Talent Hub: GTH is the flagship programme by Talent Solutions and ATEED. Focused on International Students they offer career accelerator workshops.
